Sires and Dams - 2025 Sale

Influential Sires

Puke-Nui 12/333 “Big Boy”

Big Boy was the first sire we used here at Okaka. He was 11 yrs old at his last mating. He had been used here at Okaka on our commercial cows for 3 years before being used in the stud. He had a perfect temperament and this carried through to all his progeny. A moderate, but very solid, meaty bull.

…and Okaka Big Boy R27 “Big Boy Junior”

Like his sire he was a solid meaty bull right from a calf. Has some very good 2024 sons on the ground that are following in his footsteps. Big Boy Junior is the first homebred bull we have used; he was compact and by our ET cow Alpine Legacy 827.

Sires from Meadowslea

We have generally purchased heifers or cows with Turihaua Crump E5, Meadowslea F540 and Meadowslea G914 blood or mated to these bulls. These cows have worked well here at Okaka

Meadowslea Q347 was used as an AI sire for 2022 and 2023 calf drops. His dam is a Crump E5 daughter and sire Rangatira 16209. Glen R Angus had purchased him from Meadowslea, and he is breeding well down there. He has produced moderate stocky animals, and had perfect feet and leg structure when classed.

KayJay Laser R407

Another quiet but cheeky bull, R407 adds a bit of EBV figures to the team, with that same moderate and meaty type we like. We will have a few bulls in our 2025 R2yr bull sale and more in our 2026 2yr bull sale.

Hallmark Doubleshot T023

Purchased in 2024 for $36,000, Doubleshot will add some serious power to the herd.

A moderate frame with great width and depth is exactly where we heading with our genetics. A quiet bull again who has been successful in his first season of mating here and up at Hallmark Angus. First bulls for sale in 2027 and possibly spring 2026.

Pure NZ Genetics Sires

Pinebank P80

Pinebank P80 is a bigger framed pure NZ bull, with plenty of growth. He was a standout as a calf and used at Pinebank Angus before arriving at Okaka. He has now returned to Pinebank Angus in Spring 2024 as a rising 7-year-old. His quiet temperament is a real asset and this is carrying through into his progeny. He has several daughters starting to show their worth in the Okaka herd.

Pinebank P80

… and Okaka Falloon T240

Okaka Falloon T240 is a son of Pinebank P80, and from a Waitawheta cow J150. J150 has produced a number of good bulls too. We have used him over the old Waitawheta cows this year. Smaller than his sire but solid with a very good butt.

Resurgam Ngahere U407

ResurgamU407 was used first as an AI sire over mostly pure NZ cows. He has a couple of daughters going well in the herd, and was used again as the sire for our embryos with Red Oak 12707.There are a few calves on the ground from this.

Resurgam Blu-print F3180

Resurgam Blu-print F3180 is a compact meaty bull, who hasn’t let us down. He has many sons who may not have appealing EBVs, but have a

fantastic phenotype. We have kept a son Okaka Resurgence S174 to carry on his good work.

Influencial dams and herds

Waitawheta cows

About 30 Waitawheta cows were bought from Alastair and Pat Sharpe over 5 years. They have been the best foragers on the steep hills and reproduced very well. 9 cows are rising 12 years in 2025 and still going…on the steep hills. Examples of their performances are:

Waitawheta H36 has 2 daughters in herd, one stud bull sold- Okaka S107

Waitawheta J5 has 3 daughters, 2 grand daughters and a great granddaughter in herd

Waitawheta L71 has 2 daughters in herd (one producing a stud bull), 3 bulls sold in sale

Waitawheta L96 has 1 daughter in herd, 2 bulls sold in sale

Waitawheta J101 has had 3 bulls sold in sale

Waitawheta J150 has had 3 bulls sold in sale, and one Okaka stud bull Okaka T240.

Red Oak Cows and Red Oak 15468

About 20 cows were purchased from Red Oak around 2017 and 2018. They have tended to have a good frame with good fleshing overtop. They have performed well on Okaka and provided a good core of cows for us to begin breeding.

With Red Oak 15468 we have noticed the depth and balance of the progeny 12468 produces. She has had a couple of very good bulls of late, including lot 1 at our 2024 sale. We have some embryos (to Hallmark Doubleshot T023) arriving in 2025.

Red Oak 12707 was bought in partnership with Resurgam Angus in the 2023 Red Oak cow sale. She is a wide, deep and well-structured cow that we have taken embryos from. We have three heifers and two bulls

from her. Three of which are embryos to Resurgam U407 (2 bulls and 1 heifer), with hopefully another embryo calf arriving in the spring.

Meadowslea cows and Meadowslea L274

Many cows have come into the herd from the Meadowslea cow sales in the autumn. Quite a few 10 yr cows as well some heifers. There are about 6 remaining in the herd, with plenty of Meadowslea blood through the herd. Generally, very moderate animals with good do ability for the hills. Right in the direction we are heading.

We purchased Meadowslea L274 as a rising 2 year heifer from the first Meadowslea cow sale in 2017. She was from an old meadowslea cow and the bull Ratanui Lad 21. L274 is very well put together and optimum for steep hill country. She has produced many daughters, all of which have made it to at least first mating and 3 are still in the herd (with 2 granddaughters in the herd also). We have some embryos (to Hallmark Doubleshot T023) arriving in 2025.

Alpine Legacy 827

Legacy 827 is wide and deep, and was purchased from the Alpine dispersal sale in 2017. She has produced a herd sire here at Okaka (Okaka Big Boy R27) from bull Puke-Nui 12/333. There are two daughters in the herd, and several embryos (to Hallmark Doubleshot T023) arriving in 2025.

Rangatira cows

Two Rangatira cows are contributing to Okaka Angus.Rangatira 14-222 and Kaharau 12-9609. 14-222 has produced two top bulls for our bull sales and Kaharau 12-9609 has put two heifers into the herd. We may take embryos from Rangatira 14-222.
